Seeing is Believing
Future phones and PDAs won’t have buttons. They’ll listen. Software from Advanced Recognition Technologies is being integrated into Texas Instruments chips for speaker-independent Voice Dialing and for handwriting recognition. TI’s open OMAP platform, is used by Nokia, Sony, Ericsson, Palm, Sendo, and the Microsoft phone platform.
Intel may base their voice and handwriting recognition on X-Scale chips. IBM has integrated the Embedded ViaVoice into XScale microarchitecture and software companies like Fonix do text to speech on handhelds and speech enable appliances.
Voice XML can navigate menu options with voice. Vision with MPEG-4, could be next. Intel has boldly posted their vision library in the public domain. Video cameras “get smart” with Face it. Vision recognition in PDA’s might be the next trick. Now multiply by one million. How far is the Pocket Loox from voice and vision recognition? About THAT close.
Welcome to the real world.
