The IEEE 802.16 Working Group meets from May 20 to May 24, 2002 in Calgary, Canada to finalize the universal standard for Fixed Broadband Wireless Access Systems in the 2-11 GHz radio frequencies.

The mission of Working Group 802.16 is “to develop standards and recommended practices to support the development and deployment of fixed broadband wireless access systems. It will allow the creation and deployment of efficient, high-speed wireless metropolitan area network equipment that is interoperable, regardless of its source. ”

IEEE Standard 802.16, published last month, defines a standard for Broadband Wireless Access below 11 Ghz. The project advanced at this meeting will enhance the physical layer (PHY) and medium access control layer (MAC) of the existing standard to optimize it for radio frequencies from 2 to 11 GHz, both licensed and unlicensed.

Wi-LAN is hosting the meeting and is the Chair of the OFDM Forum. The Forum encourages the broad acceptance of a single compatible global OFDM standard.

Meanwhile, in Boston, the Society for Information Display is mobilizing eyewear, demonstrating MicroOptical clip-on displays. Damn. I want with an OQO (XP-in-a-Palm), please.
