T-Mobile USA, on Thursday announced it is now offering customers the ability to send 10-second video messages with sound, a first for the United States.

The feature will be available initially through the Nokia 3650 phone (right). Customers would be able to use this feature by using the phone to record 10 seconds of action, tapping in an email address and hitting send. T-Mobile also plans to provide the capability on other phones.

Short travel videos shot with a Nokia phone show that the quality isn’t great. Still, using only the Nokia 3650 to record and send video could be an interesting development, not only for individuals but for businesses and media companies like newspapers and radio stations. The quality should improve with better compression, processing power and speed.

The video messaging feature will cost $3 a month for 10 video messages and 30 cents for each additional message. The phone, which also comes with camera capabilities, can initially be purchased via the company’s Web site or by calling T-Mobile’s toll free number for $199.99 after a $100 rebate.

Bellevue, Washington-based T-Mobile said it will eventually sell the phone through its retail stores although it declined to be specific.

T-Mobile has a line of camera phones but the Nokia 3650 is unique in that it can shoot and send video. Their line also includes the $250 Sidekick, $500 PocketPC phone and $500, Palm-based Treo 270 phone.
