Colubris Networks is teaming with RSA Security to create a robust WiFi security solution for enterprises. Colubris Access Points, including the CN1050 and CN1054, are the first APs to be awarded Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification.

They feature embedded VPN data encryption technology using RSA SecurID two-factor authentication software and RSA Keon digital certificate management software. With RSA SecurID to authenticate their VPN, users can authenticate and secure their wireless users. This, says Colubris, enables enterprises to provide a simple and seamless user experience and consistently adhere to the highest security standards in the industry.

“With the unprecedented growth in wireless networking, companies must maintain secure access to vital information and application”, said Stuart Cohen, director of partner development at RSA Security.

FIPS 140-2 certification allows federal, state and municipal agencies requiring adherence to FIPS - notably government agencies in the U.S. and Canada - to deploy and manage secure 802.11-based WLANs.

FIPs 140-2 (links), is an encryption standard demanded by the federal government. The financial community is also requiring FIPS 140-2 compliance. FIPS 140-2 was signed on 22nd June 2001, superceding FIPS 140-1. Only FIPS 140-2 conformance is now accepted by NIST. Without it there is a good chance that municipal networks won’t be used by key players.

This is particular true with police agencies who must upgrade their mobile terminals from CDPD. Wi-Fi may provide a cheaper, faster alternative to cellular-based GPRS and 1XRTT - but that may require FIPS 140-2 compliance.

Colubris Networks’ family of WLAN solutions offers a comprehensive support for popular security technology. This includes onboard IPSec termination, support for 802.1X authentication and X.509 digital certificate authentication.
