The Sprint PCS Connection Card model PC3300 provides both cellular and WiFi access for Sprint users. The wireless PC card includes Sprint PCS Connection Manager software, jointly developed by Sierra Wireless and Sprint.

In addition to managing connectivity to Sprint’s wide-area 3G network, the software allows users to conveniently manage connections to Wi-Fi ZONES compatible with Sprint PCS Wi-Fi Access - available in an ever-growing list of airports, convention centers, hotels, shopping malls and other public venues - through one software interface. With the software, customers can travel across the country, detect Wi-Fi ZONES compatible with Sprint service and quickly connect to the Internet or their company networks with the use of a third-party Wi-Fi card or a laptop with embedded Wi-Fi technology.

The new Sprint PCS Connection Card is now available at a suggested retail price of $229.99 and works with any laptop computer that uses Windows 98SE/2000/ME/XP or Tablet XP and is equipped with a PCMCIA Type II PC Card slot. It does not support PDAs. Additional software for Windows Mobile-based and Palm Powered PCS Vision Smart Devices from Sprint can be found at sprint.handango.com.

In related news, French telecommunications equipment manufacturer Alcatel, smart-card maker Gemplus and Norwegian software vendor Birdstep, agreed Tuesday to jointly develop a system that will allow portable device users to roam easily and securely between WLAN networks and a range of cellular networks, including those based on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) technologies.
