Sprint could reveal plans within the next month for a high-speed wireless data service, according to Forbes magazine.
Legg Mason analyst Craig Mallitz said in a note to clients, he expects Sprint, the No. 4 U.S. mobile company to formalize plans to use EV-DO technology, the same technology as rival Verizon Wireless. EV-DO is a data-only standard that enables about 300 kbps but Sprint would have to dedicate channels to “Data Only”.
Mallitz said it is “inevitable” for Sprint to chose the same data-only technology standard as Verizon because high-speed gear that combines voice and data (EV-DV), would not be available until 2006 or 2007.
Meanwhile, Reuters reports that Sprint’s Chief Operating Officer Len Lauer told investors on Monday that they’re considering everything; EV-DO, EV-DV and “4G” Flarion.
