Campuses are a major growth area for wireless networks. Data from the Campus Computing Project show that the percentage of US colleges and universities operating wireless LANs more than doubled in recent years, from 29.6 percent in 2001 to 77.2 percent in fall 2003.

This is fine by Sputnik. Their powerful outdoor access points and management software make managing campus-wide WiFi networks cheap and easy. A Sputnik-powered Wi-Fi network can provision itself, authenticate and track end users, and be managed from a remote location. Sputnik says their system is used by the University of Washington, Boston University, and the University of California at Davis.

This week Sputnik announced a special Unwired Campus program with special higher education discounts and a co-marketing program to support add-on applications for Sputnik-powered networks. They also provided free Wi-Fi access for attendees at the San Francisco Syllabus2004 conference on technology for higher education and for attendees at the NACUBO annual meeting for campus business officers in Milwaukee.

Sputnik and start-up eWireless, hope to make Indianapolis one of the top 10 wireless cities in Intel’s annual survey.
