Billboard magazine will begin publishing a weekly Top 20 Ringtone Chart in conjunction with Consect, a provider of U.S. mobile market analysis. The CTIA will sponsor the chart, which is set to debut in the Nov. 6 issue of Billboard.
Consect s collection method is based on agreements with distributors and sellers of ringtones, which provide Consect with information on their sales numbers to different wireless service providers.
Consect s research puts the U.S. mobile music market at more than $300 million annually, and the global market at around $3.1 billion–revenues that are generated almost entirely from ringtones, according to Consect.
Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association CEO Steve Largent said ringtones now account for 10% of the music industry s revenue.
Can a real billboard be far behind?
