Light Reading’s first ever show about WiMax, called WiMax: Why Now? attracted some 200-plus attendees in New York.
Fixed and mobile wireless products were exhibited and presentations were made. Unstrung’s WiMax Guide is the best overview I’ve seen on the technology [Telephony's Guide to WiMax and Intel's WiMax Tech Journal also have good detail].
The all-day show was held last Thursday at the Union Square W Hotel in Manhattan. Heavy Reading analyst Rick Thompson hosted the event, which included demonstrations and speakers from Navini Networks, SR Telecom and Stratex Networks.
Jeff Thompson, president and COO of fixed wireless operator TowerStream, delivered the keynote, talking about life in a pre-WiMax world and how the coming standard will shake things up (see TowerStream: Unwired in the City).
Like others, Thompson expects mobile WiMax services — rather than the initial fixed wireless offerings — to bring the technology to the masses.
Meanwhile, Alvarion bought InterWave, a maker of compact mobile base stations for micro cell/ 802.16e sites, Lucent and Bellair are teamin up, Korea is gettin WiBro, and WiMax certification will be delayed 6 months as a testing facility is prepared.
