Sony may challenge Apple’s lead in the digital music download market with a music service specifically for the Playstation Portable, which is expected to arrive in Europe and the US in March, reports The Register.

Downloading game levels and software updates is expected for the Playstation Portable (PSP). However, the system will be extended to music in the summer, says the article.

Sony already runs a music download service, Connect. Launched in the US in May 2004, the service was criticised for not being as easy to use as Apple’s iTunes. Sony has said little about Connect in the intervening months.

Whether the PSP music service will leverage Connect or use an entirely separate system is not yet known. PSP has built-in WiFi and a new Universal Media Disc (UMD) format, which can play music and films.

Would a Sony/Apple movie download service deliver the goods? Verizon, Sprint and Cingular will want a piece of the music download business, too. What better model than iTunes?
