Nextel Communications is now offering its digital push-to-talk (PTT) and wireless data services to a wider scope of customers in its North Carolina network.
Nextel maintains iDEN is not dead yet. The upgrade also includes the availability of Nextel’s recently launched Group Connect, which enables up to 21 callers to participate in a PTT conversation simultaneously. A caller can invite up to 20 attendees to participate in one group call, but has the capability to store up to 25 groups at a time.
Meanwhile Nextel is closing their Flarion broadband wireless test in the North Carolina region. Will Sprint-Nextel work with Intel/WiMax for a cable-based Triple Play? Who knows. Nextel recently introduced WiFi service.
If the Sprint-Nextel merger is completed as expected later this year, perhaps as early as July, it could set in motion a ripple effect touching the affiliate operators for both companies, It’s a complicated set of arrangements explains Wireless Week.
