ComputerWorld reports that Broadcom filed an antitrust suit against cell phone chip maker Qualcomm on Friday, charging it with unfair licensing practices.
In a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey (download PDF), Broadcom accused Qualcomm of abusing the wireless standards-setting process, failing to license technologies for cellular wireless standards on fair and reasonable terms, and other anticompetitive practices.Qualcomm’s “monopoly” in Code Division Multiple Access chip sets has led to higher cell phone prices in the U.S., according to Broadcom. The goal of the lawsuit is to prevent the same thing from happening with the emerging class of third-generation cell phones, Broadcom said today.
Intel, probably no friend of Qualcomm’s, is not a part of this lawsuit. They’ve got troubles of their own.
