AirBand Communications said Monday it has launched pre-WiMAX wireless broadband service in Philadelphia, targeting small and medium-sized businesses.

AirBand uses unlicensed 5.8 GHz as well as licensed spectrum to offer 1- to 10-Mbps service in Baltimore, Dallas, Houston and Phoenix. They claim to provide a higher-level of connectivity than many small and medium-sized businesses can otherwise afford.

“AirBand is leveling the playing field for business owners in Philadelphia by offering them the broadband services that have previously only been available to large enterprises,” Mark F. Spagnolo, president and CEO of airBand, said in a statement.

He said that the service offers enterprise-class capabilities such as redundancy. The company claims it has 2,000 customers in cities it already services. The company says it can deploy point-to-point connections in licensed 16, 17 and 23 GHz bands using equipment from Ceragon Networks and others.

Philadelphia is becoming a wireless Mecca. They’re building a city-wide WiFi cloud, have a WiMax-like service from AirBand, EV-DO from Verizon and are testing DVB-H mobile television via Crown Castle and Nokia.
