Vint Cerf, Google’s idea man, has joined the board of directors of First Mile, a Broadband Everywhere non-profit. He joins other heavy hitters Jim Baller, Dewayne Hendricks, Steve Corbat , Susan Estrada and Lynn St.Amour to supervise the activities and affairs of the non-profit.
Cerf, now the Chief Internet Evangelist for Google, is widely known as one of the Fathers of the Internet, as a co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet.
I believe that the goals of FirstMile.US are exactly what our nation needs right now, noted Vint Cerf. FirstMile.US has the staff and the smarts to help bring the US back to a position of leadership by creating a grassroots coalition that focuses on creating demand for broadband especially symmetric, low-latency and high-performance big broadband. I look forward to helping grow FirstMile.US into a position of leadership.
FirstMile.US is a nationally-focused non-profit. Their partners include the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) and the Institute for Next Generation Internet at San Francisco State University.
The Next Generation Internet (INGI) was founded in partnership with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom s newly established Digital Media Advisory Council (DMAC) bringing educational institutions, government agencies, major corporations and community based organizations in San Franciso to improve education and economic development.
San Franciso State students are collaborating on a Japanese film in real time this week at igrid2005. The SF team will add sound to a 4K (4,000 pixels across) Super High Definition video streamed live from Tokyo.
