NVIDIA announced today they are working with Hybrid Graphics to deliver native-accelerated 3D API for mobile phones.

Hybrid’s optimized OpenGL ES drivers for the NVIDIA GoForce family of graphics processing units (GPUs) is said to provide developers with an optimized 3D graphics platform. OpenGL ES 3D graphics are available on QUALCOMM’s BREW phones, for example.

“The collaboration between NVIDIA and Hybrid marks the introduction of one of the industry’s first truly integrated, fully optimized Java 3D graphics API solutions offered by a GPU vendor,” said Neil Trevett, vice president of embedded content at NVIDIA.

NVIDIA will expand its software development toolkit for mobile phones by integrating Hybrid’s Mobile Framework V6 — which includes support for OpenVG 1.0, a SVG (scalable vector graphics) Tiny player, and Java bindings for both OpenGL ES and SVG.

“Through this close collaboration, we are working to raise the bar for integrated hardware and software platforms to enable higher quality and better performing Java- and Open GL ES-based 3D content on millions of mobile devices,” said Panu Wilska, vice president of sales and marketing at Hybrid Graphics.

The OpenVG 1.0 standard was developed by Khronos members including 3Dlabs, ATI, Bitboys, BitFlash, DMP, Ericsson, Falanx, Hybrid Graphics, Ikivo, Imagination Technologies, Nokia, NVIDIA, Motorola, PalmSource, Symbian, and Sun.

The 3D graphics standard will be in Sony’s PlayStation 3 and is expected to show off the high-performance, platform independent spec. The OpenGL standard has been used in desktop computers and operating systems since 1992. Today, it’s a prominent library for Linux platforms, as well as the fallback standard for Microsoft Windows, whose developers prefer the proprietary DirectX API.
