New statistics on worldwide broadband subscribers have been released by market researcher In-Stat:
- The total number of worldwide broadband subscribers passed 200 million in February, 2006.
- On a worldwide basis, DSL currently accounts for 69% of all broadband subscribers.
- The number of worldwide broadband subscribers will double over the next five years. By year-end 2010, worldwide broadband subscribers will reach 413 million.
- Based on current worldwide broadband growth rates, 3.7 million new subscribers will sign up for broadband services each month this year. In the United States, 670,000 new subscribers every month are projected to sign up for broadband service.
“There are several reasons behind the rapid growth in, but the most important are the increasing availability of broadband services and the proliferation of new applications that rely on high-speed connections,” said Mike Paxton, In-Stat analyst.
“Other drivers fueling subscriber growth include a gradual, but consistent, reduction in monthly service prices, and the beginnings of effective bundling strategies that link high-speed Internet service with video and telephony services.”
In-Stat is a division of the largest business-to-business publisher in the United States, Reed Business Information.
The Leichtman Research Group counted 42.8 million cable and DSL broadband subscriptions in the U.S. at the end of 2005. Cable broadband has a 57% share of the overall market with over 24.3 million cable modem subscribers in the United States. Phone companies had 18.5 million DSL subs at the end of last year.
Pew Internet says the share of Americans who have broadband connections at home has now reached 42% (84 million), up from 29% (59 million) in January 2005.
With consumer-generated content from YouTube videos and Google, bandwidth demand will only grow.

By 2010, 55 percent of U.S. broadband households will subscribe to a triple-play or quadruple-play bundle, Parks Associates predicts. And, revenues from bundled services, most notably the quad-play, are expected to reach nearly $120 billion.
