Earthlink will build a Wi-Fi network in New Orleans, reports BizJournals and WiFiPlanet. The city council approved an ordinance yesterday that will allow Earthlink to build a combination free/paid network similar to San Franciso’s.
EarthLink said it will enable multiple, competing providers to offer their services to consumers and businesses over its network. For small businesses, New Orleans’ wireless network will also provide an alternative for broadband connectivity, such as an affordable wireless T-1 solution.
The network will use Tropos Control for monitoring and maintenance. In addition, EarthLink will deploy Motorola’s MOTOwi4 portfolio, including its Canopy high-speed backhaul and Wi-Fi mesh network equipment.
EarthLink has municipal Wi-Fi projects in San Francisco, Milpitas, and Anaheim, Calif., and Philadelphia (which only this week got their final okay).
New Orleans had earlier installed a city-wide wireless video surveillance network using Tropos gear. City officials are using Sony’s SNC-RZ30N cameras as the “eyes” of the system, and backboning them with wireless and fiber. Sony’s IP cameras feature remote-controlled pan/tilt/zoom, a 25X optical zoom lens, day/night and wireless capabilities.
