AC Transit, near San Francisco, is set to become the first public bus system in Northern California to offer free WiFi, to increase ridership in the Bay Area, reports SF Gate.
The Wi-Fi program is funded with $340,000 with state transportation money. For AC Transit, the goal is stay competitive and more appealing than transit agencies that don’t yet offer wireless, like BART and MUNI.
Testing is scheduled to begin next week, with the goal to have service running by midfall, on the crossbay routes that link the East Bay to San Francisco.
Santa Clara County VTA and Caltrain are working on getting Wi-Fi. Caltrain, the Altamont Commuter Express and some Washington state ferries currently offer WiFi. It is also available on public buses in Seattle, Riverside in Southern California, Cincinnati, Tampa and Cedar Rapids.
