Nintendo says its Wi-Fi Connection online gaming service has just passed the two million unique players mark. The last milestone for the service was 1 million Wi-Fi unique users, reached in March, at which point more than 27 million game sessions had been launched.

Nintendo’s handheld leadership is expected to continue unabated with today’s launch of Star Fox Command (left) and the anticipation of additional upcoming Wi-Fi titles.

The Star Fox Command shooter earned an 8/10 from IGN and a 7.5/10 from GameSpot, and will offer online dogfighting.

Nintendo also boasted of the 70 million individual game sessions logged during the service’s nine months of operation. The company expects that figure to rise as more titles utilize Wi-Fi Connection capabilities.

The growth of Nintendo’s online service has been enormous since its launch in November 2005. In early December, Nintendo announced that a mere 200,000 unique users had signed onto Wi-Fi Connection, with around three million global connections. The upcoming Wii, which has wi-fi built in, will also utilize the service.

Popular Wi-Fi Connection titles include Mario Kart DS, Metroid Prime Hunters and Animal Crossing.
