Today is GIS Day!

The blog MyWonderfulWorld has a great collection of map resources to celebrate:

The European Space Agency (ESA) has created a special layer of content that will appear in Google Earth, enabling people to see over 130 new ESA satellite images including natural phenomena and manmade landmarks such as the Palm Islands in Dubai.

The new images can be accessed easily by clicking on the ‘Featured Content’ checkbox in the Google Earth sidebar and further clicking on the ESA icon.

GeoEye, the world’s largest commercial satellite remote-sensing company, purchased high-bandwidth, high-performance compute technology from SGI with four SGI Altix systems for satellite image processing for the .41-meter panchromatic and 1.65-meter multi-spectral imagery. “We have three satellites currently in orbit – OrbView-2 and 3, and IKONOS – but when GeoEye-1 becomes fully operational, it will be the world’s most powerful and most accurate high-resolution commercial imaging satellite, requiring 4X the processing power.

Astronomers are mapping the universe with open source software.

Portland Metro is partnering with Pixxures to host, deploy, and broker images of the Portland Metro area. Pixxures has been providing 6-inch and 1-foot resolution orthorectified imagery for GIS and other applications. The new deal means that anyone can now purchase the data for use. The Portland Metro data includes imagery from Clackmas, Multnomah, and Washington counties.
