Phew! We’re back online after a 50 hour outage. The DNS service for dailywireless.org is provided by zoneedit.com. The zoneedit service has been rock-solid for dailywireless since its start in 2003. The service provided primary and backup name service, which they claim is highly distributed and reliable and to date it has been. On Monday night around 10pm both servers go down and dailywireless is effectively cut off from the throngs of loyal readers.

By the next morning, zoneedit is contacted and they say they’re aware of the problem and are working on it. Thats the only information we received throughout the whole outage. After about 15 hours of no new information and no fix in sight, a change order was submitted to the domain registrar to add the dailywireless box itself as the third nameserver. These changes can be slow to propagate so we waited. After 28 hours had elapsed and 43 hours into the outage, the registrar was contacted but the communication was cut short (dropped on-line chat session). It was late in the evening so we put off further communication until the next day. Later that night zoneedit had restored DNS service.
