C/Net reports that EarthLink officially launched the City of New Orleans’ municipal wireless network today (map). The approximately 20-square mile Wi-Fi mesh network covers parts of the Orleans parish.

EarthLink is supporting the City’s rebuilding efforts by providing a free tier of service available up to 300Kbps for residents and businesses in New Orleans throughout the coverage area.

Like residents in Anaheim and Milpitas, New Orleans residents will also have access to higher-speed service. Subscribers can pay $21.95 per month for a symmetrical 1 megabit per second downstream and upstream service. The service also includes up to eight e-mail mailboxes as well as security services like SpamBlocker and the EarthLink Protection Control Center.

EarthLink deployed Tropos Networks routers on light poles throughout the city. The Tropos system forms a wireless mesh, routing data through nearby access points. The network is operated and optimized using Tropos Control and Tropos Insight, a suite of end-to-end configuration, monitoring and maintenance tools.
