Alvarion today announced that leading Indian cellular service provider Aircel, is expanding its current WiMAX network and planning to use BreezeMAX 3300 across 50 cities in northern and eastern India.

Aircel currently has deployments in eight cities and is using BreezeMAX to overlay and expand its current broadband and cellular network infrastructure to small and medium enterprise (SME) customers. Alvarion’s BreezeMAX 3300 is an extension of its market leading WiMAX platform operating in 3.3GHz, the frequency band specifically licensed for WiMAX services in India.

Alvarion also announced this week it has added Wi-Fi functionality to its BreezeMAX product line.

The company said its BreezeMAX W12 and BreezeACCESS W12 provide carriers with a converged network with Wi-Fi portability for IEEE 802.11b/g devices along with WiMAX quality-of-service. Each WI2 solution consists of an outdoor Wi-Fi access point with integrated power module capable of connecting to various commercial power sources, as well as either a BreezeMAX or BreezeACCESS VL unit for backhaul. Its new offering enables service providers deploying WiMAX networks the capability to extend their BreezeMAX networks in 2.3, 2.5 or 3 GHz spectrum bands and BreezeACCESS VL networks in 5 GHz with Wi-Fi hot spot coverage.

There are about one million broadband users in India now.
