Engadget notes that Spectec’s SDIO GPS receiver packs a SiRF Star III GPS device into a microSD slot and has to 2GB of memory (for things like maps). Pricing information not available yet, but it might be handy for smartphones like the Treo.
It features SiRF Star III chips (with high sensitivity), a built-in GPS omni directional Antenna, 20-Channel GPS all-in-view tracking accuracy, Real time navigation for location based services and a colored LED showings GPS signal fixed or searching.
The Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), developed for civil aviation by the FAA, augments the GPS to provide the additional accuracy.
The SiRFstarIII chip (made by SiRF), is distinguished from earlier SiRF chips and from GPS chipsets made by other manufacturers (such as Garmin or Trimble), largely due to its faster Time to First Fix (TTFF) and its ability to acquire and maintain a signal lock in urban or densely covered forest environments.
