NextWave Grabs WiMAX Ball

Taking a cue from its Qualcomm roots, NextWave Wireless is looking to build a wireless broadband network based on technology it calls WiMAXplus, a proprietary flavor of WiMAX. If successful, the network may only work with chips that contain proprietary NextWave technology, says the San Diego Examiner.

Engadget notes that Spectec’s SDIO GPS receiver packs a SiRF Star III GPS device into a microSD slot and has to 2GB of memory (for things like maps). Pricing information not available yet, but it might be handy for smartphones like the Treo.

Tsunami Monitoring Act Passed

CBS News reports that President Bush has signed a bill to upgrade and modernize the U.S. tsunami warning system, almost two years after the Indian Ocean tsunami (Wikipedia) killed some 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

Connexion: Not Dead Yet?

While it’s not exactly news, Lufthansa says the airline is seeking a way to restart Boeing’s ill-fated Connexion in-flight Internet system. Lufthansa, along with Panasonic’s Avionics unit, Luxembourg satellite-operator SES Global and Connexion subcontractor ViaSat, plan to re-launch the service toward the end of 2007, according to the Wall Street Journal.
