A Library Director at a college in Santa Fe, NM quit due to health concerns over WiFi in the library.

Rebekah Zablud Azen, MLIS, resigned from her position at Quimby Memorial Library, Southwestern College, on December 16th, 2006 after administrators refused to discuss the issue. “I don’t feel that I should have to jeopardize my health to secure or maintain employment, but allowing oneself to be irradiated is fast becoming a condition of employment for librarians. I just said no.”

Come to Portland’s Multnomah County Library, Rebekah. The “Wi-Fi Free” building allows 60 minutes of wired internet access before you’re kicked off. Avoiding the city’s 134 square mile free WiFi service, however, will be problematic.

Thank Portland’s Director of Libraries for her leadership, here.

Seattle is hosting the American Library Association conference this weekend. If attendees enter The Seattle Public Library they’d better put their shields up!

One Response to “WiFi Free Libraries”

I am surprised at how many people think that 100-200mW of RF energy 2 to 10 feet away will cause health problems…. there is no conclusive proof that RF from cell phones causes cancer either, — even at less than inches from the brain…

….fear of technology I guess!
