Missouri’s St. Louis County, is planning a 524-square-mile wireless network, reports Saint Louis Today.

The St. Louis Economic Development Commission hired NetLabs of St. Louis to do the study, paying the firm $67,500.

The wireless plan is being led by County Executive Charlie Dooley (right). It would provide wireless broadband in unincorporated areas and 91 municipalities in St. Louis County.

After determining what infrastructure is needed, the next step of the process would be to open the process to Internet providers. Google and EarthLink as well as Charter Communications and AT&T could compete for the job.

Funding for the project will likely come from the St. Louis Regional Exchange, a nonprofit organization founded last year to help develop affordable Internet communication services in the St. Louis region, reports the St. Louis Business Journal.

In other Metropolitan Wireless news, LongBeachPortals.com allows visitors to view specialized portals being used or being developed for the City of Long Beach’s wireless Internet projects.

The “live” portal sites are keyed to each geographic area. They automatically pop into view once they access one of the wireless networks in The Zone. Long Beach launched their “cloud” back in 2003, making it one of the first “hot zones” in the nation.
