Verizon Wireless today announced initial EV-DO Rev. A service in Mass., including Boston and its suburbs, Chicago and its suburbs, Salt Lake City and other cities in Utah, as well as in Florida throughout the state’s entire existing area of Verizon Wireless’ wireless broadband network.

EV-DO Revision A provides upload speeds are five to six times faster than with the company’s existing EV-DO network, which is available to more than 200 million Americans in 242 major metropolitan areas and 180 major airports from coast to coast.

Verizon says the company’s business data service, BroadbandAccess, will run faster and more efficiently with these network enhancements. Rev A coverage areas can expect average download speeds of 450-800 kilobits per second (kbps) and average upload speeds of 300-400 kbps.

A new compact USB 720 wireless modem, from Novatel, will be available tomorrow, can connect to all the latest notebooks, desktops and handhelds via an industry standard USB interface. The USB 720 joins the AirCard 595 PC Card as the first two enhanced wireless broadband network devices from Verizon and will be available online tomorrow.

Yesterday, Sprint announced it has expanded its EVDO Rev A service to South Florida, Portland, Ore. and Puerto Rico. Sprint says more than 95 million people in 21 other major markets now get the faster data speeds of Rev A. Sprint was the first carrier to roll out the upgraded EV-DO Revision A technology in October of last year.

Cingular is one of the first carriers in the world to offer HSDPA on their (3G) W-CDMA network. AT&T’ claims an average data speeds between 400-700 Kbps down, with bursts to more than a megabit per second. Nationwide, AT&T’s 3G service is available in more than 160 markets, including most of the top 100 major cities in the country.

AT&T Wireless (Cingular) also announced Push-To-Talk (PTT) service for $.15 per minute. PTT capable phones, include the Blackberry Pearl, LG models CG300 CU400 and F7200, Motorola V365, Samsung models D347, D357 and D407 or Sony- Ericsson Z525a. Additional devices will be available throughout the year.

Though Verizon launched their Rev-A network, the cities they’ve officially listed aren’t the only places they have Rev-A turned on at. There are quite a few major markets they aren’t announcing yet, for whatever reason.
