The City of San Carlos announced this morning that they have approved a letter agreement with Silicon Valley Metro Connect to become the “Concept City” in San Mateo County for the Wireless Silicon Valley Project.

As a Concept City, the Silicon Valley Metro Connect vendor team of IBM, Cisco, Azulstar and SeaKay will deploy a “Phase 0” Proof of Concept Wireless Broadband Network in a 1 square mile area in San Carlos.

The Wireless Broadband Network will be in operation in that area for a period of up to 120 days. During that time, the Silicon Valley Metro Connect team plans to use the network to ratify and finalize the project network design, demonstrate various broadband and wireless technologies and show potential applications of the Wireless Silicon Valley network.

During the initial phase of the Concept City process, the Silicon Valley Metro Connect team will design and install a Wireless Broadband Network. This process will begin in February with approval of permits and actual deployment of equipment anticipated in March.

The Silicon Valley Metro Connect team will then begin tuning the network with an eye on using it and a second Concept City area in Santa Clara County as the “template” for the deployment of the Wireless Silicon Valley network later this year throughout Silicon Valley.

The Wireless Silicon Valley project is co-sponsored by Joint Venture: Silicon Valley and the San Mateo County Telecom Authority (SAMCAT). It will ultimately provide a Wireless Broadband Network for 41 entities including every City in both San Mateo and Santa Clara counties as well cities in Santa Cruz and Alameda counties.
