The 8.7 million residents of Mexico City may soon get citywide WiFi, if Mayor Marcelo Ebrard gets his way.
The plan seems to focus on connecting “schools and government offices and will also operate 4,000 videocameras to be installed citywide, the mayor said. But public wireless internet may be a big part of it.
The mayor signed an agreement with China telecommunications company ZTE this week to established the Wi-Fi network to connect schools and government offices. “The city government is giving this project the highest priority,” Ebrard said, adding that the project will get off the ground within months.
The agreement between Mexico’s most populous city and ZTE is said to provide free access throughout the city.
