The BBC reports US television and radio network CBS has fired disc jockey Don Imus after an explosive row over his use of racist language on his radio program.

The move came just hours after he broadcast his last show on Thursday.

Imus called the mostly black members of the Rutgers University women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos”. “Ho” is slang for prostitute and “nappy-headed” is a derogatory term for the hair of many black people.

Many major advertisers announced they will pull their advertising including; General Motors, GlaxoSmithKline, Procter & Gamble, American Express, Sprint Nextel, and others. NBC officials denied that the loss of advertising dollars for Imus’ show, which is neck-and-neck with CNN in the morning ratings, figured in the cancellation.

Of course there’s always Satellite Radio.
