Nokia, the world’s top mobile-phone maker, filed a patent countersuit against Qualcomm today seeking damages and an injunction against the U.S. chipmaker, reports C/Net.

Nokia, which makes more than one in three of cell phones sold globally, said on Monday that Qualcomm had infringed on six implementation patents in its MediaFlo mobile-TV technology and its BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) mobile-data technology.

“We see (that) Qualcomm has copied our technology without compensating us, so we need to enforce our technologies and patents we have,” said Tero Ojanperä, Nokia’s chief technology officer. “We feel we have a strong case in both areas,” Ojanpera said.

The U.S. International Trade Commission ruled against Qualcomm in a battle with rival Broadcom last week, banning imports of new advanced phones using chips the ITC said infringed on Broadcom patents.

Qualcomm has filed 11 patent suits against Nokia in less than two years, seeking damages and injunctions, so far without success. Last month, Nokia filed its first countersuit against Qualcomm, in Wisconsin, related to chipset technologies.

The QUALCOMM/Broadcom litigation and the QUALCOMM/Nokia litigation are featured sections of the huge Qualcomm Legal Center.

With a pox on their house, the BREW 2007 Conference, scheduled June 20 - 22 in San Diego, may be a bit subdued this year.
