Webcasting Concerts

Summer’s here!
So are outdoor music concerts, like my city’s Water Front Blues Festival. It’s the main fund raiser for the Oregon Food Bank.

The 6 day concert, which attracts more than 100,000 people, is held in Portland. Last year, blues fans donated $545,000 and 103,500 pounds of food to fight hunger and its root causes.

C/Net says Internet radio may go silent on June 26. In protest of the elevated royalty fees Webcasters are poised to begin owing to the record industry next month, Internet radio operators are planning to stage a “day of silence.” Larger operators such as Yahoo, RealNetworks’ Rhapsody service and Pandora, may also sign on.

Adelstein: Open Access for 700MHz

FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein, a Democrat, said he supports the idea of imposing an “open-access” condition on companies bidding to acquire 700 MHz spectrum. Adelstein is one of the two Democrats on the five member Federal Communications Commission. “Open-Access” would require an auction winner to offer access to rivals.

Satellite operator Intelsat will acquired by BC Partners, a private equity firm, who will have a majority stake, reports Space Today. The deal values the company at just over $5 billion.

Aviation Week reports that Northrop Grumman and L-3 Communications are turning electronically scanned array (AESA) radars into flying hotspots.
An F-22 Raptor, using their AN/APG-77 radar was linked to an L-3 Communications modem. The modem is software-programmable, which means it can be adapted to send and receive using various protocols.

AT&T Phones do Video Share

Speaking at the NXTcomm Trade Show in Chicago on Tuesday, AT&T’s New CEO and Chairman, Randall Stephenson, introduced what he claims is the first service allowing callers to share live video during a phone call. It’s the first AT&T service to be delivered on the company’s new IMS platform.
