WiMAX is crap, says Paul Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm, during a panel discussion this week at Fortune’s I-Meme Conference. During the “Who Moves the Bits?” panel, he predicted that the long-distance wireless standard is headed nowhere fast.
“If you look at the WiMAX experiment in Korea, you’ll see that only a few thousand people are using it — and those are probably the friends and family of the people who rolled it out. It’s not a good technology.”
Jacobs likes “4G” technology — at least their own brand of 4G.
Meanwhile, Smartmoney.com is weighing in on wireless pioneer Craig McCaw’s Clearwire. The article promises to assess whether the venture is “boon or bungle,” says Fortune’s Blog. The hard-boiled conclusion: “The jury is still out.”
