PePWave, a Citywide Wi-Fi solutions company for individuals and businesses, today announced the commercial launch of the PePWave Surf DX, an outdoor Wi-Fi client with integrated panel antenna (pdf). PepWave says households far away from the nearest access point, in city or rural Wi-Fi networks, will benefit from Surf DX’s extreme range.
The $245 Surf DX includes a 400 mW radio and an integrated 13 dB antenna which enables customers and homes, normally outside the traditional coverage area of a Wi-Fi access point, to get reliable service. The rugged outdoor enclosure can withstand the elements and shares the same feature set as the rest of the Surf line.
Indoor Wi-Fi modems such as the PePWave Surf 200 and Surf 400 allow many people to get reliable Internet service from a citywide Wi-Fi network. However, buildings made with brick, stucco, concrete, and metal are sometimes impossible to reach with an indoor Wi-Fi modem.
Surf DX is designed to overcome these obstacles and provide reliable connections where no other Wi-Fi modem could.
“Citywide Wi-Fi is designed to bring quality Internet service to all the residents of a city, not just those whose homes are well suited for it,” said Alex Chan, Managing Director at PePWave. “We have created Surf DX to allow previously unserved locations a reliable connection.”
Surf DX is designed for an easy installation. With an exterior signal meter, flexible mounting options, and a 1-wire feed; installation is said to be quick and simple. Surf DX suits a variety of needs including: home Internet access, remote video surveillance, connecting distant offices, and many other applications where extreme range connectivity is required.
The PePWave Central Management System (PCMS) - an integrated suite of administration tools — can remotely manage the new PePWave Surf DX, as well as other PePWave products. It’s utilized by service providers to manage their inventory and deployment of PePWave devices, as well as downloading firmware, configuration, and security profiles. PCMS will perform automated testing and report RF utilization statistics for any PePWave device on the provider’s networks.
PePWave Central Management provides an overall, macro view of the entire Wi-Fi network for network providers. The PePWave Surf DX offers the same flexibility in customization and co-branding options under PePWave’s Service Provider Program to service providers and ODM customers for meeting their time to market and customization needs.
