Taiwan’s National Communications Commission announced Tuesday that eight companies received initial approval for WiMAX licenses. Five others were rejected.

The eight companies include Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, Taiwan Digital Communication, Vastar Cable TV System, Global On Corp, Far EasTone Telecommunications (a joint venture of Vibo Telecom and Tecom), Tatung Telecommunications, and First International Telecom. They will face the second stage of the license approval on the 26th.

The eight candidates will bid for six operating licenses on July 26. The bidding rules dictate that three operating licenses be issued to the northern region and three to the south.

The Taiwanese government plans to make Taiwan the world’s largest testing ground for WiMax. Taiwan, an island of 23 million people, hopes to become a leader in developing WiMax products such as PC cards, as well as broadband services, by making itself a leader in the technology, according to Ho Mei-yueh, Taiwan’s economics minister.
