Navini Networks today announced their first commercial implementation of 802.16e Mobile WiMAX software with beamforming (pdf). The first deployment is in Panama City, Panama, where operator Liberty Technologies has started implementing Navini’s software upgrade to convert their network to 16e.

Liberty Technologies selected Navini’s 2.3 GHz Ripwave system for their $3 million deployment, offering customers multi-megabit network speeds, a zero-install plug-and-play modem. “We have been shipping our Ripwave MX8 16e hardware platform for over a year and now the software is ready for commercial use, explained Sai Subramanian, Vice President of Marketing, for Navini Networks.

Navini’s implementation of Mobile WiMAX with beamforming is compliant with the IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard and ready for certification. Navini will submit the Ripwave MX base stations supporting Mobile WiMAX for formal certification testing by the WiMAX Forum once the certification labs are open and available for testing. Navini and ASUS will jointly develop certified Mobile WiMAX subscriber modems to be marketed under Navini’s Ripwave brand.

Horizon Wi-Com is trialing its high-speed wireless broadband service in major U.S. cities in the Northeast region using 802.16e compatible equipment from Navini Networks (pdf).

Phase I of the deployment will implement service in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Richmond, and Cincinnati. Horizon Wi-Com purchased the 2.3 GHz, WCS A Block from Verizon. Black & Veatch will provide the support and program management
