802.20: One Vote Per Entity

The IEEE’s 802.20 Executive Committee and the related Oversight Committee have changed the working group’s procedures to “one entity, one vote,” reports EE Times. 8 Candidates for Taiwan WiMAX

Taiwan’s National Communications Commission announced Tuesday that eight companies received initial approval for WiMAX licenses. Five others were rejected.

Clearwire & Sprint Agree on WiMAX Roaming

Clearwire and Sprint have agreed to provide Mobile WiMAX roaming between the two companys’ networks, reports the Wall Street Journal. Sprint also plans to provide dual-mode, CDMA-WiMAX services nationwide, using both its own and Clearwire’s WiMAX networks, reports RCR News.

Blackberry Does WiFi/UMA — & GPS

The Blackberry 8820, to be carried by AT&T, features support for EDGE and Wi-Fi. Available through AT&T later in the summer, the 8820 features a full QWERTY keyboard, a large 320 x 240 display and a trackball navigation system. Pricing was not announced but Amazon has it for as low as $129 (with contract).

HiWire [not to be confused with JiWire], announced a 24-channel lineup for its upcoming 700MHz mobile TV broadcast trial in Las Vegas. It’s more than double the eight-channel lineup currently offered by rival MediaFLO USA, notes RCR News.

JiWire + MetroFi = Location-based Ads

Microsoft today announced an alliance with mobile advertising provider JiWire to begin placing ads on municipal Wi-Fi networks, starting with Portland, Oregon, and Oakland County, Mich.
