Both Engadget and Gizmodo report the free software iPhone unlock—the only one that counts— has now been let loose in the wild (links and TechMeme).
Engadget says iUnlock is the first free, open source iPhone SIM unlock app. Everyone can now unlock their iPhones for free.
Here’s Gizmodo’s software mirror: Download iUnlock here (zip). This is the only original iUnlock file says Gizmodo.
GeoHot, of the hardware unlock fame, is claiming in IRC channels that he has unlocked the iPhone using the same method as iPhone Sim Free. Their dev team has come through with a software unlock and has a wiki to guide you though.
David Harrison, a 23-year-old hacker in Belfast, Northern Ireland, claims to be the first to package the procedure in an all-inclusive piece of software that can be downloaded for free at (www.freeiphoneunlock.com), reports Forbes.
Harrison says he unlocked his phone in about 20 minutes. He put his program online early Wednesday but plans to release a speedier version in the next day or two that, he said, will do the job in less than five minutes. “Even a 10-year-old will be able to figure this out,” he said. Harrison said he was speaking to Forbes.com on an iPhone, using the Vodafone network.
Just like AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Yahoo and Google, Apple wants to get into the phone business. These hacks might bite them in the business model.
