Motorola today announced the launch of its 5.4 GHz Canopy solutions for the United States and Canada. Part of the MOTOwi4 portfolio, the new offerings will provide network operators and commercial customers with access to additional spectrum.

The FCC recently opened the 5.4 GHz radio frequency (RF) for commercial use. The 5.4 GHz spectrum offers 255 MHz of bandwidth, double that available in the 5.8 GHz band. It allows for the co-location of multiple radios on one rooftop or location with minimal interference.

“Our network infrastructure currently consists of Canopy Point-to-Multipoint access modules and the Point-to-Point product for backhaul,” said Brian Magnuson, president, Cascade Networks. “These products bring more opportunities and greater flexibility as more radios can co-locate on existing infrastructure.”

The 5.4 GHz PTP 400 and PTP 600 unlicensed products provides a backhaul solution for Canopy PMP, mesh and PTP links where wired access is not available.

Both the Canopy 5.4 GHz and the 5.4 GHz PTP 400 & 600 Series integrate with other wireless systems in the 5 GHz spectrum, including the MOTOwi4 portfolio of broadband wireless solutions.

Competitor Alvarion, the world’s most deployed wireless broadband platform, introduced their BreezeACCESS VL platform, in the unlicensed 5 GHz frequency some time ago. Alvarion’s Knowledge Center has more info on implementing 5.4 GHz networks.

Their 5.4 GHz BreezeACCESS VL can be used for backhaul or local access while their BreezeNET B100 provides high capacity, point-to-point wireless links. BreezeNET wireless LAN products are fully IEEE 802.11 and 802.11b compliant and are Wi-Fi certified. Alvarion is offering $255 off their BreezeACCESS VL and BreezeNET B100 gear through the end of the year.

Alvarion and Intel, at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing, China in April 2007, demonstrated mobile WiMAX with a live demonstration of MIMO Matrix B antennas. They also showcased mobile WiMAX at WiMAX World, last month. At Chicago’s WiMAX World show, participants were driven around, connected through laptop Mobile WiMAX PC cards and Alvarion’s 4Motion 802.16e base station.
