Microsoft this week joined the voice-operated search field, with a free directory-assistance service for mobile users. Live Search 411 (FAQ) delivers local listings as well as weather updates, movie show times and airline information. Users with Internet-enabled devices can also receive links to maps and one-click driving directions. It also works with regular PCs.

Last month, Microsoft rolled out several enhancements to its core Live Search portal, including updates designed to improve results for queries related to entertainment, shopping and health care.

The updated Live Search for Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.0 includes voice input, gas prices, traffic maps, and hours of operation for businesses. It is available on Tuesday for a free download at wls.live.com on your mobile phone. Liveside.net has more.

The offering is powered by Tellme Networks, a developer of speech-recognition software that Microsoft bought for a rumored $900 million earlier this year. Microsoft’s Live Search will compete with Google’s GOOG-411, Nuance Voice Search and others like Yahoo Go.

A recent study from Usable Products found that mobile users preferred using voice rather than their fingers to navigate search applications. Works better while driving, too.
