Colubris Networks, has been selected by Alcatel-Lucent and SFR, a major French telecom operator, to provide Wi-Fi equipment for the “Paris Wi-Fi” project. The project is the largest municipal Wi-Fi network in Europe, offering Internet access to the greatest number of Parisians and tourists using Wi-Fi technologies.

The City of Paris will set up its own ubiquitous public Wi-Fi network, called Paris Wi-Fi. As of Sept. 29, when Paris Wi-Fi was officially launched, 225 public sites were covered, serviced by 315 access points. Full coverage of the 260 municipal areas (using 400 access points) is expected by the end of October, Colubris officials report.

The Alcatel-Lucent and SFR consortium, selected for the project, designed and implemented an indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi coverage solution for municipal areas, including parks, squares, town halls, libraries and museums. No financial details of the deal were released.

The Paris project follows Colubris’ public Wi-Fi deployments covering the City of Luzern, Switzerland and Singapore as well as Hong Kong subways.

In June, Colubris entered into a partnership agreement with France-based railway infrastructure developer Alstom to provide wireless networks and services on Alstom’s trains throughout Europe. The first deployments under the new partnership are for Italy’s Pendolino train, which includes the Trenitalia and Cisalpino railways, and France’s high-speed TGV train, according to the company.
