Steve Stroh’s Broadband Wireless Internet Access site has the news that Catcher Holdings, a leader in ruggedized, portable handheld computing platforms for security applications, plans to acquire 100% of the common stock of Vivato Networks, the innovative phased array WiFi system. Steve points out the acquisition is expected to close in 4Q 2007, and that Vivato is now headquartered in Portland, Oregon (that’s news to me). Vivato, a true innovator, shut down in December, 2005.
According to Catcher Holdings, the new company will deliver extended range, wireless network infrastructure and multi-functional client platforms. Markets including military, homeland security, integrated public safety, municipal, transportation and logistics will benefit from their systems level solutions, says the company.
The acquisition combines Catcher’s patented real-time computing and communication platforms with Vivato Networks’ extended reach WiFi base-station technology, using Vivato’s patented packet steering, phased array technology.
Oregon ISP, Step House (which hosts DailyWireless) and Invictus Networks (a wireless solutions provider), successfully bid Vivato gear to win the Corvallis, Oregon RFP, which includes Oregon State University (OSU). Another company in Portland, VeriLAN, which provides wireless services for IEEE 802, WiMAX Forum, ZigBee Alliance, IETF, ICANN, and other prestigious global telecommunications bodies, uses three outdoor Vivatos on its building roof, near downtown.
VeriLAN’s outdoor Vivatos provide 360 degree WiFi access a mile or more from their building — AT NO COST TO THE PUBLIC.
