Hong Kong Broadband Network, a subsidiary of City Telecom, announced it will provide free wireless internet access to public housing residents, starting today.

The company has set up more than 1,000 hotspots in 120 different housing estates as part of a project organized by the Housing Authority. The project covers about 80 percent of the public rental housing estates in Hong Kong, City Telecom spokesperson Jessie Cheng said yesterday.

The free service will be available in various high-density residential areas. Tenants can use the free internet access in public areas of the estates between 6am and 11pm. The hotspots will be located in the lobbies so residents outside the lobby entrance may also be able to tap into the signal.

City Telecom’s free wireless internet access project follows a previous cooperation with the Housing Authority to provide television screens in the lift lobbies of housing estates showing news and estate information.

New statistics released by the Chinese Government show that China is due to surpass the United States as the nation with the most internet users in the coming months.
