DragonWave a leading supplier of high capacity backhaul, today announced that Nextlink Wireless, a subsidiary of XO Holding, will buy DragonWave’s AirPair and Horizon Compact products in support of Nextlink’s portfolio of broadband wireless services.
XO Communications provides wireless backhaul coverage though Nextlink Wireless, which owns local multipoint distribution system spectrum in 75 metro markets and eleven major metropolitan areas across the United States, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, San Diego, Tampa and Washington, DC.
Nextlink Wireless will use DragonWave’s Horizon and AirPair products which operate in both licensed and unlicensed radio frequencies in the 6-to-38-GHz range, ensuring interference-free performance for customers’ traffic.
DragonWave is said to provide scalable, ultra-low latency, wire-speed native Ethernet connectivity up to 800 Mbps full duplex with indoor and outdoor deployment options.
From wireless hubs deployed in metropolitan areas, XO can provide qualified line-of-sight locations within a range of up to 11 miles.
Competitor First Avenue Networks (below) bought out the radio spectrum assets of bankrupt of Advanced Radio Telecom (at 39GHz) and Teligent (at 24 GHz) and now has 24/39 GHz licenses throughout the United States with deep coverage in 77 metropolitan areas.
Tower operators Crown Castle and American Tower, which previously created a joint venture in FiberTower, merged with First Avenue Networks in a deal valued at approximately $1.5 billion, back in 2006. First Avenue operates a “last mile” broadband wireless system in the 24/39 GHz bands with an installed base in 12 markets with more than 1000 sites.
DailyWireless has more on millimeter band deployments.
