Motorola has named a new chief financial officer, reports RCR News. Paul Liska, a former Sears, Roebuck and Co. CFO, will take over March 1 for Tom Meredith, a Motorola board member who was named interim CFO last March.
Liska, who most recently was a partner at several private-equity firms, is a surprise choice for the post. Some Motorola insiders guessed the new CFO would come from within the company.
Mark Greinke has been appointed Portland, Oregon’s new Chief Technology Officer following a west coast search with 120 applications for the position. Greinke has been with the city for over three years first serving as the Portland’s Information Security Manager and most recently as the Interim Chief Technology Officer.
“I’m extremely pleased with Mark’s appointment,” said Mayor Tom Potter. “Mark has a keen sense of the challenges facing the City. We are fortunate to have Mark as part of the OMF Team.”
Greinke joined the City following 11 years with Intel Corporation, in Hillsboro Oregon where he lead technology initiatives to move many of Intel’s businesses processes from paper to online transactions as well as the automation of Intel’s latest chip factories.
Former Chief Technology Officer Matt Lampe left the City last year to take a position as Chief Information Officer at Los Angeles City Department of Water and Power. Lampe took an active roll in bringing municipal WiFi to the city of Portland.
The city must decide what to do with their contract with MetroFi to build a municipal wireless network. It is now stalled out, only 20% completed. MetroFi now refuses to continue building out the network unless it obtains “anchor tenant” commitments by the city.
There are 590 functional access points in Portland, but the company would need up to 2,500 to cover the city, according to Logan Kleier, Wi-Fi project manager for the city of Portland.
The city is refusing to commit to an anchor tenant contract, saying it would be cheaper and more flexible to go with wireless solutions provided by cellular carriers or (presumably) Clearwire.
An interview with MetroFi CEO Chuck Haas was aired earlier this week on OPB — skip to 54 minutes 40 seconds.
