Nike and Apple today announced an expansion of their Nike + iPod collaboration. Originally the system stored data from your Nike shoes to your iPod. Now, the companies will include cardio workout equipment.

The two companies are working with gym equipment manufacturers to add an iPod nano dock to treadmills, stair climbers, and stationary bikes. Manufacturers like Life Fitness, Precor, Star Trac and Technogym are said to be on tap to provide equipment to your local gym.

The iPod dock allows a user to record data during their workout and upload and track the data at the nikeplus.com website. Users will plug in their iPod nano into the equipment at the start of their workout to automatically record their progress. Users can then connect their iPod with their computer to upload the workout to www.nikeplus.com.

Already logging 50 million miles from runners and joggers using the Nike+ in their running shoes, the new Nike + iPod system lets you download your workout and convert it to “CardioMiles” so workouts and challenges with runners and other gym-goers can be compared.
