NextWave Wireless today announced a mobile TV/mulitimedia solution for WiMAX operators.
MXtv technology is completely compatible with the current 802.16e standard, says NextWave, and is designed to slash the cost of mobile broadcast services. MXtv is a standard feature of NextWave’s recently announced own line of WiMAX infrastructure products.
In a separate announcement today, NextWave and Huawei Technologies announced an agreement to deliver MXtv technology in its end-to-end WiMAX network solution.
Supporting 30 fps QVGA and WQVGA content, MXtv technology provides up to 45 high-quality mobile TV channels in 10 MHz with rapid channel switching times of under two seconds. MXtv interleaves broadcast content with voice and data content in each user transmission to dynamically optimize the mix of voice, data, and broadcast services on each RF carrier.
Similar to the company’s end-to-end TDtv solution for UMTS operators, MXtv utilizes macro-diversity technology to deliver optimal performance and does not require operators to acquire additional spectrum to enter the mobile TV market.
The NextWave end-to-end solution is comprised of MXtv-enabled WiMAX network infrastructure and subscriber terminals powered by the company’s NW2000 MXtv-enabled WiMAX System-on-a-Chip (SoC). MediaFusion multimedia content management, discovery and advertising platform is provided by PacketVideo, a subsidiary of NextWave Wireless. PacketVideo also includes a full Electronic Service Guide (ESG) that can be customized to the look and feel requirements of the operators.
NextWave will demonstrate MXtv mobile multicast and broadcast technology at next month’s CTIA show in Las Vegas April 1 – 3, 2008.
