Marvin: Life? Don’t talk to me about life!
– The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
If you want Apple’s iPhone in the U.S., you’ve got two choices: use AT&T’s wireless service, or risk unlocking your phone to use T-Mobile, explains C/Net’s John Falcone.
AT&T’s exclusivity contract will be in effect until 2012. But maybe there’s a loophole…
While it looks almost identical, the iPod Touch is missing a few key iPhone features [like the phone part].
But let’s envision a second-gen Touch that changes that–call it the iPod Max. The Max would use nearly the exact same housing as the iPhone, but in addition to Wi-Fi, the iPod Max would have a WiMax module. Throw a Skype application on the iPod Max, and the possibilities really expand.
There is no such thing as an iPod Max, there’s no announced plans for an WiMax-enabled iPod, and there’s not even a Skype application available on the iPhone/iPod Touch platform, and even if one were to appear, the apparent inability of third-party applications to run in the background (multitask) seems to be a huge stumbling block.
By the same token, however, none of this is completely outside the realm of possibility, either…

Of course a 3G iPhone is still a rumor, too. A Nokia Webtablet with WiMAX is coming. But stock up on batteries. You’ll need ‘em.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a handy electronic reference book, its chief selling points are the words ‘Don’t Panic’ written in large friendly letters on the cover. Its reporters travel the length and breadth of the Galaxy, drinking heavily, going to lots of parties and generally having a great time.
