Verizon Wireless today said its Open Development Device Conference will feature the release and publication of Version 1.0 of the technical specifications for new wireless devices that will work on its “Any Device, Any App” network-only service option.
The conference, being held today, March 19, in New York City, will focus on how consumer electronics companies and entrepreneurs can bring new wireless devices to the marketplace under Verizon Wireless’ Open Development initiative. Previously, only products sold by Verizon Wireless could function on the company’s network.
The conference will establish shared goals of streamlining the certification while preserving the company’s network performance.
“Our goal is to make our network the on-ramp for next generation services,” Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg told the audience.
According to Business Week, Verizon did not divulge any details of the pricing plans. Nor did it publish any specifications to help software developers create applications for the network.
“I was most impressed with how they thought through the process,” says Bill Alberth, chief technology officer at Motorola. “But I want to see more details on testing.”
